Giving Tuesday has become an incredible opportunity for nonprofits to harness the power of generosity and engage new supporters.

Yet surprisingly, many organizations don’t fully tap into the potential of this global movement, which allows nonprofits to capture the spirit of giving right on the heels of Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Whether your organization has participated before or you’re considering launching a campaign for the first time, Giving Tuesday can be a powerful way to rally your community and amplify your impact.

Here are some best practices to help set you up for success.

1. Strategize Early & Document Document Document

One of the best things you can do to ensure a successful Giving Tuesday is to plan early and to document those plans. Start by gathering your team for a brainstorming session where you can align your strategy with your organization’s mission and vision. Focus on highlighting your biggest successes, what you’ve achieved so far, and the impact you hope to continue making. The key here is to be intentional—your Giving Tuesday campaign should be mission-driven and connected to the core of your work

Once you have your ideas, document everything! A solid strategy should also include a communications calendar outlining when and how your campaign messages will go out. Having a clear plan will keep you organized this year and give you a template to build on for future campaigns, saving time and effort in the long run.

2. Incorporate Equity and Inclusivity

Equity and inclusivity are crucial values that should be reflected in everything your organization does, including your Giving Tuesday campaign. As you develop your messaging, ensure it speaks to a broad and diverse audience. It’s a great opportunity to highlight the communities you serve and how your mission is working to address inequity or systemic barriers.

Campaigns that prioritize inclusivity resonate with donors who share a commitment to social justice, which can help expand your donor base and deepen connections with supporters who believe in creating equitable change.

3. Set SMARTIE Goals

Goal-setting is essential for any successful campaign, and Giving Tuesday is no exception. Your goals should be specific, measurable, actionable, and realistic. One great way to ensure your goals drive impact is to adopt the SMARTIE framework, which adds inclusivity and equity to traditional SMART goals.

For example, instead of simply setting a goal to recruit 100 volunteers, make it more meaningful by aiming to recruit a diverse group, ensuring that at least 20% come from underrepresented communities. This way, your campaign doesn’t just drive numbers but also creates a more inclusive and equitable outcome.

4. Make Your Donor Communications Personal

You’ll want your communication with donors to go beyond generic appeals. To really be seen and heard, create personalized messages that highlight how their contributions make a real difference. And be as specific as possible.

Show your supporters how their contributions directly help the community, your organization and/or the impact you are envisioning in the world. For example, if your organization runs an afterschool program, show how a donation of specific funds contributes to youth success through providing school supplies, classroom materials, or learning opportunities.

Connecting your donor to the impact of their gift creates a deeper relationship, inspires continued support, and tangibly shows how their gift can change lives, situations, environments, or whatever your mission is focused on

5. Involve Your Board and Volunteers

Don’t go it alone—getting your board members and volunteers involved in your Giving Tuesday campaign is a game-changer. They have their own respective networks, and tapping into those can dramatically increase your reach.

Equip them with pre-written social media posts, emails, and talking points to make sharing your campaign easier. Don’t forget to give them pictures to include! Not only will this raise awareness for your cause, but it also strengthens relationships between your organization and your board members and volunteers.

6. Don’t Forget to Thank Your Donors, Partners and Other Supporters

While Giving Tuesday is an excellent opportunity to raise funds, it’s equally important to show appreciation for the support you’ve already received. Use the day to thank your existing donors, partners and other supporters for their continued contributions. A heartfelt thank-you note on social media or a shoutout can go a long way in building loyalty and encouraging future donations

7. Leverage Hashtags & Social Media Best Practices

Social media is essential for amplifying your Giving Tuesday campaign, and using the right hashtags can significantly boost your visibility. Research hashtags that are popular in your sector in addition to #GivingTuesday, and include them in your posts to reach a wider audience. A strong social media strategy will help drive engagement and connect you with potential new supporters passionate about your cause

8. Use Storytelling to Share Data

Data can be powerful, but it’s the stories behind the numbers that truly resonate with people. For your Giving Tuesday campaign, combine quantitative data (e.g., the number of people served) with qualitative stories (e.g., testimonials from beneficiaries).

Personal stories bring your mission to life and show donors exactly how their support makes a real difference. Whether it’s a success story from a program participant or a heartfelt message from a volunteer, storytelling is key to inspiring more donations.

9. Have a Clear Call to Action

Finally, make sure your audience knows exactly how they can support your campaign. Whether you’re asking for donations, volunteers, or social media shares, provide a clear, actionable call to action. Don’t leave them guessing—tell them how they can help your organization reach its goals.

Remember, Giving Tuesday is not just a one-off fundraising day—it’s an opportunity to build momentum for your organization’s fundraising strategy year-round. Putting the right plan in place and involving your community can turn Giving Tuesday into a valuable asset that helps you reach your mission and create lasting impact.
